DIY Christmas Gift Bag | Easy Sewing Project Using 10-Inch Fabric Squares

Looking for a quick and easy Christmas sewing project? These adorable little fabric gift bags are the perfect way to add a handmade touch to your holiday gift-giving! And the best part? You only need two 10-inch fabric squares to get started!

Whether you're tucking in a gift card, a little surprise, or a small handmade gift, these cute little bags are a fun alternative to traditional gift wrapping. They're reusable, beginner-friendly, and a great way to use up some of those beautiful fabric squares in your stash!

And don't let the Christmas fabric fool you! You can make these little bags for birthdays, Valentine's Day, teacher gifts, party favors, or just because. Simply change your fabric to match the occasion!

Supplies You'll Need

  • (2) 10-inch fabric squares
  • 9-inch circle template
  • Fabric marking pen or pencil
  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
  • Sewing machine
  • Coordinating thread
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Ribbon, fabric strips, or other material for handles
  • Optional: Snap, ribbon, string, or yarn for a closure

Let's get sewing!

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric Circles

Start with two 10-inch fabric squares. Using a 9-inch circle template, trace a circle onto each square.

Carefully cut out both circles.

Candy Cane Ridge Tip: This is a great opportunity to dig into your fabric stash! Mix and match coordinating Christmas prints for a fun, scrappy look.

Step 2: Fold and Stitch

Take each fabric circle and fold it in half with right sides together, creating a semicircle.

Stitch along the curved edge using a ΒΌ-inch seam allowance, leaving a small opening for turning.

Repeat with your second circle.

Step 3: Turn and Press

Turn both pieces right side out through the openings you left along the curved edges.

Gently push out the curved seams and give each piece a good press.

You'll now have two folded semicircles ready to become your gift bag!

Step 4: Overlap Your Pieces

Lay your two semicircles flat, positioning one on top of the other so they overlap approximately 2–3 inches.

Adjust the overlap depending on how you want your finished bag to look.

Stitch along the overlapping curved edges to secure the two pieces together.

Now your little gift bag is starting to take shape!

Step 5: Add Your Handles

Before sewing the sides of your bag, it's time to add the handles.

You can use ribbon, fabric strips, or another decorative trim that coordinates with your fabric.

Position your handles where you'd like them and stitch them securely in place.

You can make your handles short for a cute little gift bag or slightly longer if you prefer.

Step 6: Sew the Sides

Fold your project in half, with the side you want on the outside facing inward.

Line up the edges and stitch down both sides to create your bag.

Turn your bag right side out, gently push out the corners, and give everything a final press.

And just like that, you've made an adorable little fabric gift bag!

Step 7: Box the Corners (Optional)

Want your gift bag to have a little more shape?

You can box the bottom corners to create a flatter base. This is completely optional, but it's a fun way to give your bag a little extra dimension.

Step 8: Add a Closure (Optional)

If you'd like to keep your little gift tucked safely inside, you can add a simple closure.

A snap works great, or you can use a small piece of ribbon, string, or yarn to tie your bag closed.

You can even add a cute little button for an extra decorative touch!

Make It Your Own!

One of my favorite things about this project is how easy it is to customize!

Want a larger gift bag? Start with larger fabric circles.

Need something smaller? Use smaller circles to create a tiny bag that's perfect for a gift card or little treat.

Making gifts for another occasion? Swap the Christmas fabric for birthday prints, florals, patriotic fabrics, or whatever you have in your stash!

These little bags would also make adorable party favors, teacher appreciation gifts, or handmade packaging for small items.
