The Springtime Squares Quilted Pillow is a simple and satisfying project that turns 36 small 2½" squares into a beautiful patchwork pillow. With a 6 x 6 grid layout, plus an inner and outer border, this design highlights all those fun fabrics while creating a fresh spring look.
This project is perfect for quilters of all skill levels. If you’re new to quilting, it’s a great way to practice basic piecing. If you’ve been quilting for years, it’s a relaxing scrap-busting project that comes together quickly.

Fabric Used in This Project
For this pillow, I used beautiful fabrics designed by Heather Briggs of My Sew Quilty Life, which give the project a soft, cheerful spring feel.
- The 36 patchwork squares come from a Sunbonnet mini charm pack from Heather’s Sunbonnet fabric line. These sweet prints create a colorful scrappy center while still coordinating beautifully together.
- The pillow backing, along with the inner and outer borders, are made using fabrics from Heather’s Flower Girl fabric line.
These two collections complement each other perfectly and help give the pillow a bright, fresh springtime look.
Why You’ll Love This Project
The Springtime Squares Quilted Pillow is designed to be simple, colorful, and versatile. By combining small squares from different fabrics, you can create a pillow that feels bright, fresh, and full of personality—just like spring.
This project is great for:
- Using up 2½" fabric scraps or leftover precuts
- Creating seasonal home décor for spring
- Practice simple patchwork quilting
- Making a quick weekend quilt project
Whether you choose soft pastels, florals, or bright spring colors, every pillow will look unique depending on the fabrics you select.
The Patchwork Design
The center of the pillow features 36 squares arranged in a 6 x 6 grid, creating a classic patchwork look. Once the squares are sewn together, the design is framed with an inner border and outer border, which helps highlight the patchwork and gives the pillow a finished, polished look.
This layout keeps the design simple while allowing the fabrics to really shine.
Turn Your Quilt Block into a Pillow
Once your patchwork top is complete, you’ll turn it into a cozy decorative pillow. Adding batting and backing gives the pillow a soft quilted texture that makes it perfect for decorating a couch, chair, bench, or bed during the spring season.
Quilt it simply with straight lines, or add a bit of texture with free-motion quilting if you’d like.
