Sew a Reversible Rag Christmas Gift Bag – A Fast & Festive Handmade Gift Wrap Idea!
Looking for a fun way to make your Christmas gifts even more special this year? Instead of wrapping presents in paper that gets tossed away, create a reusable Rag Christmas Gift Bag! It's quick, beginner-friendly, and adds a cozy handmade touch that your family and friends will love.
One of my favorite things about this project is how fast it comes together. If you have a stack of 10-inch squares sitting in your sewing room, this is the perfect project to put them to good use!
What You'll Need
For the size we're making today, you'll need:
- 5 ten-inch fabric squares
- Coordinating thread
- Basic sewing supplies
- A pair of good spring-loaded scissors for clipping the seams https://amzn.to/4w2tZdA
Have a layer cake in your fabric stash? You're all set! This project is a great way to use those precut 10-inch squares. If you don't have a layer cake, simply cut five 10-inch squares from your favorite Christmas fabric yardage.
Reversible for Two Different Looks
One of the best features of this gift bag is that it's completely reversible!
One side has the classic rag quilt look with the soft, fluffy fringed seams on the outside. Simply turn it inside out, and you'll have a cleaner, polished look without the fringed edges showing. It's like getting two gift bags in one!
Whether you want a rustic farmhouse feel or a more traditional fabric finish, you can choose the look that fits your holiday style.
A Quick Project You'll Want to Make Again and Again
This is one of those projects that's hard to stop making once you've finished the first one. They sew together quickly, making them perfect for:
- Christmas gifts
- Hostess gifts
- Teacher gifts
- Cookie exchanges
- Secret Santa presents
- Holiday party favors
Make several in different sizes and keep them on hand throughout the holiday season.
A Tip That Will Save Your Hands
The only part of this project that takes a little extra time is clipping the seam allowances to create that soft ragged fringe.
If you plan on making more than one bag, I highly recommend investing in a good pair of spring-loaded scissors. Your hands will definitely thank you after clipping all those seams! They make the process much faster and much more comfortable.
Perfect for Using Your Fabric Stash
If you're like me, you probably have leftover 10-inch squares from previous projects just waiting to become something beautiful. This gift bag is a wonderful stash buster and a great way to turn those extra fabrics into something useful that can be enjoyed year after year.
Imagine placing a handmade quilt, mug rug, ornaments, or baked goodies inside one of these reusable bags. The packaging becomes part of the gift!

How to make this bag:
Step 1: they should be 2 1/2" x 20"; press 1/4" from either side and then fold over on the center creating a 2" x 20" strip of fabric. Stitch along both side with a 1/8" seam allowance
Step 2: Lay down liner fabric and place a handle 1 1/2" from either side and 1" down. Place top fabric down, matching all sides.
Step 3: Stitch top of front and back with a 1/2" seam allowance, back stitch over the handles.
Step 4: Place both front and back on top of each other and stitch down both sides and bottom with a 3/4" seam allowance.
